Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has paid tribute to the Right Reverend Neville DeSouza OJ, former Anglican Archbishop of Jamaica, noting that the clergyman gave many years of community and national public service with passion, deep devotion and distinction.

“The Right Rev DeSouza gave distinguished service for 21 years as Anglican Lord Bishop of Jamaica and before his ascension to national office, served the people of St. James, Westmoreland, Clarendon and Manchester, among others parishes, with humility and diligence,” Prime Minister Simpson Miller said.

She added that: “It is noteworthy that during his tenure as the head of the Anglican Church in Jamaica, Rev. DeSouza presided over the historic ordination of women to the Ministry for the first time in the history of the Anglican Church in Jamaica.”

The Prime Minister remembered former Bishop DeSouza for his wide range of interests, advocacy and areas of service. “He was known, respected and loved for his service, not only to the Anglican Church, but to several other denominations and non-religious causes,” Mrs Simpson Miller recalled.

The Prime Minister has extended condolences to the family of former Bishop DeSouza and the Anglican Church community.
