Prime Minister Regrets the Passing of Dr Herbert Eldemire C.D:

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has expressed profound regret at the passing of former JLP Minister of Health, Dr. Herbert Eldemire C.D., who died peacefully at his home in Reading, St. James, this morning (May 20) after a brief illness. He was 79 years old.
Members of his family including his daughter, Dr. The Most Honourable Denise Eldemire-Shearer, were at his bedside.
In paying tribute to Dr. Herbert Eldemire, the Prime Minister said he had given a lifetime of service to his country in many fields. He served as Minister of Health from 1962 – 1972 and was responsible for, among other things, the establishment of the Cornwall Regional Hospital, the School of Nursing and the introduction of the National Family Planning Programme. He was again elected to Parliament for a third term from 1976 – 1980.
Dr. Herbert Eldemire served as Chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party from 1967 – 1972. As a physician, he maintained a large private practice in Montego Bay for over 40 years. He was an avid sportsman and was involved in the promotion of sports, especially boxing.
The Prime Minister said that Jamaica is indebted to Dr. Eldemire for his pioneering work in the development of our health services immediately after independence and the dedication which he brought to public service. Mr Golding extended condolences to his family on behalf of the government and people of Jamaica.
