The Prime Minister, the Honourable Bruce Golding, has directed the Attorney General to undertake an immediate review of the Evidence Act and advise on measures that may be necessary to prevent the perversion of justice by the admission into evidence of statements, the authenticity of which may be open to question but the authors of which are not available to be examined.
The Prime Minister’s directive comes in the wake of the confession by a policeman that he had fabricated a statement purported to have been made by a witness in a murder trial.
The Prime Minister said this admission, commendable though it is, raises grave questions about the integrity of criminal proceedings and could place the judicial process in disrepute unless the possibility of its occurrence is eliminated. The Attorney General will submit the findings and recommendations of the review to the Cabinet.
