Prime Minister Golding to meet with Opposition on recommendations of the Electoral Commission

January 13, 2011

The Full Story

Parliament accepted Prime Minister Bruce Golding’s recommendation that debate on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica’s Continuing Legal Reform report be suspended until the Government and Opposition had a consultation about its contents.

“The implications for something that has been important to the country over three decades is so huge that I think that this is a matter that requires consultation and I am going to propose that the debate be suspended to allow for discussion between the Government and Opposition. I think the implications are so significant that it warrants that sort of treatment before we return to the debate,” Mr Golding said.

Mr. Golding’s intervention came after Members from both sides of the House expressed extreme disapproval on several recommendations of the report.
