Prime Minister Assures of Safer and more Secure Society

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, is assuring that the administration will be re-doubling its efforts this year, to create a safer and more secure society.

Making her contribution to the 2012/13 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday June 5, Mrs. Simpson Miller assured that the new National Security Policy will be completed this year.

She pointed out that this will “provide us with a comprehensive framework to guide the national security apparatus and the administration of the criminal justice system."

Additionally, the Prime Minister said it will provide the basis for mobilising and winning national support at all levels and from all sectors of the society.

Mrs. Simpson Miller said the Policy will also frame Jamaica's co-operation and collaboration with its international partners, and pointed out that, as a major strategy, the administration will be moving to “take the profit out of crime."

This will be done through the dismantling and suppression of criminal gangs and organised criminal groups as well as their facilitators, the Prime Minister explained.

"We will continue the work to strengthen the capacity of our security forces to confront the criminal and violent forces in our society, while being mindful and respectful of the rights of all our citizens. We will also improve our social intervention programmes,” Mrs. Simpson Miller told the House.

The Prime Minister informed that National Security Minister, Hon. Peter Bunting, will expand on these measures, when he makes his presentation in the Sectoral Debate.
