The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, have accepted an invitation from the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller to be a guest of the government and people of Jamaica from August 2 to 3.
This, the first State Visit to Jamaica by President Jonathan, is in commemoration of Jamaica's 50th anniversary of Independence.
Among the highlights of the visit will be the holding of bilateral talks between Prime Minister Simpson Miller and President Jonathan, and courtesy calls on the Governor-General the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen and Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Andrew Holness.
President Jonathan and his First Lady will attend cultural activities staged by the Ministry of Youth and Culture by its Jamaica 50 Secretariat and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC); and be hosted at a State Luncheon by the Governor-General and Lady Allen.
President Jonathan, holds advanced degrees in the fields of Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology and Zoology and served as an educator in the Department of Biological Science, Rivers State College of Education. He entered representational politics in the 1990s and in December 2005 served as Governor of Bayelsa State.
In 2007, he was inaugurated as Nigeria's Vice President and was sworn in as President on May 5 2010. Dr. Jonathan has been recognised internationally for his leadership in the promotion of democracy and good governance.
Dame Patience is known for her philanthropic work. She is the founder of the A.Aruera Reachout Foundation which, in the last eight years has trained over 4,000 women in different skills to enable them to support themselves and their families.
