October 3, 2012

The Full Story

The Portmore New Testament Church of God, in partnership with churches in St Catherine and the Corporate Area, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) and the Portmore Municipal Council, will present a Jamaica 50 celebratory event highlighting the contribution of the Christian church to nation building throughout Jamaica’s 50 years of Independence.

The event titled ‘The Church On A Mission: Celebrating The Past, Preserving The Future’ will be held over the weekend of October 6 and 7 at the Portmore New Testament Church of God in Bayside, Portmore and features two days of exciting activities which culminate in a Jubilee celebration and road march on October 7.

Sponsors of the event are the Jamaica Information Service, Jamaica National Building Society, Jamaica Business Development Corporation, Digicel and Ambucare Services.

Day one of the showcase will see a host of activities including a Gospel concert with popular gospel singer, Jermaine Edwards among others, a Fashion Showcase highlighting fashion trends through the years, a Children’s Village, cooking demonstrations, exhibits, Made in Jamaica zone and a Christian Heritage zone in which several church denominations and Christian ministries are expected to participate including Brothers of the Poor.

One of the major highlights of the two-day celebration is a Panel discussion in which the event’s theme: ‘Celebrating the past, preserving the future’, will be examined.  The panel, which includes several prominent clergymen and representatives of Jamaica Youth for Christ, will seek to highlight the strengths and successes as well as the weaknesses and failures of the Christian church. It will collectively review the church’s stewardship to the nation over the years and make suggestions for corrective and progressive action.

Students from secondary and tertiary institutions in and around the community have not been left out as there is also a ‘write and win’ competition in which students can submit a 1200 word essay which will be utilized as part of the panel discussion.

Participants stand a chance of winning mobile phones from the event’s mobile sponsor, Digicel.
