Portland residents get fire safety tips

Householders in the communities of Mill Bank and Comfort Castle in Portland were given fire safety tips by officers from the Portland Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade during house-to-house visits on Tuesday (Oct. 26).
The community outreach was part of activities by the division to observe Fire Safety Awareness Week from October 24 to 30.
During the visits, the firefighters, led by District Officer Windell Patterson, spoke to the householders about ways in which the outbreak of fires can be prevented, and the dangers posed by the unsafe use of candles, matches and mosquito destroyers.
They also provided information about what actions should be taken in the event of a fire and pointed to the importance of each home having a fire extinguisher.
Mr. Patterson told JIS News that the adjoining communities of Mill Bank and Comfort Castle were selected for the outreach because of the high incidence of fires in the areas recently.
Noting that the residents were very cooperative and responsive during the exercise, he expressed confidence that the objective of the outreach, which is the reduction in the outbreak of fires, would be realised.
A number of the residents expressed gratitude to the Portland Fire Brigade for conducting the programme, and declared their commitment to putting the prevention measures in place.
