Portland Jerk Festival set for July 3


As planning for the staging of the fifth annual Portland Jerk Festival gathers momentum every effort is being made to ensure that patrons are fully satisfied with the various offerings of the event.
The festival, which will be held at the Boston Playing Field on Sunday, July 3, was officially launched at a function held in Boston, Portland recently.
Among those in attendance were organizers of the event, sponsors and members of the general public all of whom enjoyed the meal of jerked pork, jerked chicken, fish and roasted breadfruit, which was served afterwards.
The event is being organized by a planning committee including, the Portland Parish Development Committee, the Jamaica Union of Travellers Association, the Portland Chamber of Commerce, the Jamaica Tourist Board and a number of community groups in the parish.
Among the major sponsors are, Pepsi Cola Jamaica Bottling Company, Digicel Jamaica Limited, Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited, Best Dressed Foods, GraceKennedy, Irie FM, CVM group of companies, Bank of Nova Scotia and Supreme Ventures.
Speaking to JIS News on Thursday June 9, Public Relations and Entertainment Coordinator for the planning committee, Collin Bell said the event was being organized to climax Portland’s Homecoming celebrations, which will be held during the week leading up to the date of the festival.
Noting that the day’s activities would feature a number of indigenous Jamaican art forms, he said major attractions would include performances by Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, the Fabulous Five Band, Professor Nuts, Admiral Bailey and Assassin, in addition to the Gospel Group Katalyst Crew and a host of other local talents.
Noting that no parking would be allowed for motor vehicles on the roadway in Boston, Mr. Bell said adequate parking facilities would be provided at the Folly Oval in Port Antonio, Poincianna Park in Fairy Hill, Boston Primary School and the Boston Community centre. Shuttle buses will operate from the designatedparking areas to the festival venue.
He also informed that special parking areas would be provided for VIP’s, members of the media, performers and staff members, adding that preferential accommodation packages for the occasion had been made available to patrons by a number of guest houses and hotels in the parish including the Mocking Bird Hill Hotel, Trident Hotel, Rio Vista Guest House and Fern Hill Club Hotel.
