Portland Jerk Festival Launched

June 8, 2007

The Full Story

The eighth Pepsi Portland Jerk Festival was launched on June 6 at the Folly Lighthouse in Port Antonio. To be held at a new venue – Folly Estates in Port Antonio – the festival will take place on Sunday, July 1.
The decision to stage the event at the Folly Estates represents a break with tradition, as all past festivals were held at the Boston playing field in the community of Boston, which is generally regarded as the home of jerked foods.
Addressing the launch, Sybil Rendle, Chairman of the Portland Jerk Festival Committee, said the decision to move the festival to Folly was based on the fact that the location was a more spacious venue than the Boston playing field, and would provide more comfortable accommodation for the people.
Bringing greetings, Member of Parliament for Eastern Portland and State Minister for National Security, Dr. Donald Rhodd commended the organisers of the festival for the sacrifice they have made in planning the event and commended the Boston community for the support and co-operation they have given over the years.
He affirmed his support for the decision of the organisers to re-arrange the event, which has grown to become an international calendar event.
Among the attractions to be presented on the day will be a kid’s village, art and craft booths, a cultural village and a stage show, featuring some of the most popular entertainers in the country, including Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires, Josie Wales, Freddy McGregor, George Nooks, Rising Stars 2006 winners, One Third, and Nikesha Barnes.
Gates will open at 10:00 a.m. and admission is $800 for adults, and $200 for children.
