Portland gets ready

November 4, 2010

The Full Story

As Portlanders step up preparations for Tropical Storm Tomas, the Portland Disaster Committee has been making plans to minimise the possible impact on the parish.
Forecasts have indicated that Portland is likely to face the full brunt of the storm, if it hits the island. At an emergency meeting of the committee at the Parish Council office, presided over by Mayor of Port Antonio, Councillor Floyd Patterson, member agencies indicated full readiness to mitigate the effects and to respond to any emergency that may arise.
Agencies represented were: the Parish Council; Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA); the police; Fire Brigade; Red Cross, Jamaica Public Service (JPS); National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA); National Water Commission; Jamaica Information Service (JIS); and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
Reports from the agencies on their emergency plans showed total readiness. Giving an overview of the general level of preparation, Portland Disaster Coordinator, Denise Lewis, said all zonal committees have been placed on alert and shelter managers fully briefed.
She said that preparations have been made for the activation of the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC), should it become necessary, and appealed for full support for the centre.
Arrangements are being made with service stations to provide member agencies with petrol to respond to emergencies, but agencies which plan to utilise the service must provide information to the Disaster Coordinator, to enable the process to be conducted in a smooth and timely manner.
Mayor Patterson congratulated the agencies for heightening awareness in the parish, and exhorted them to ensure that their interests are also protected.
