Cabinet has given approval for the establishment of a port community system, which will connect port personnel and allow them access to logistical information on port-related freight distribution.
“It will also facilitate the exchange of vital information and improve the efficiency in maritime trade and the transportation cycle,” said Minister with responsibility for Information, Hon. Sandrea Falconer, at Wednesday March 14 weekly Jamaica House press briefing held at the Office of the Prime Minister.
“This system is about linking and the management of databases, and management systems (through) a single web portal,” she pointed out.
Ms. Falconer noted that while various technology formats are used in port management, the system will simplify communication.
“What we hope to achieve with this, is an improvement in the quality and level of service offered at the air and seaports. This will improve on the collection of taxes and fees, improve customs, immigration, and the general transshipment and transportation of people and cargo,” Minister Falconer stated.
The port Management System is a joint venture of the Port Authority of Jamaica and Jamaica Customs.
Ms. Falconer said the establishment of the system is critical in light of the government’s overall thrust to increase visitor arrivals, expand the ports, and increase trade.
