Poppy Appeal Extended

March 11, 2004

The Full Story

The Poppy Appeal has been extended beyond the customary deadline of the end of the financial year, as this year’s target has fallen short by almost 50 per cent.
“In earlier years, we would seek to wrap up the drive at the end of the financial year, meaning the end of March, but we will have to continue our activities a little longer this year,” Chairman of the National Poppy Appeal Committee, Lt. Col. Oral Khan, told JIS News.
“We have passed about half of our target.we have raised just over $1.8 million of the $3.2 million,” he said.
In addition to the support given to needy ex-servicemen across the island, the money is also needed to assist veterans in the home for aged soldiers (Curphey Home), which costs approximately $100,000 per person per annum.
Fund-raising activities to fill the gap include two concerts this month in the parishes of Manchester and St. Ann, held under the auspices of the Custos of each parish – Dr. the Hon. Gilbert Allen and Hon. Radcliffe Walters, respectively.
The first will be a military band concert on Sunday, March 14, at 3:00 p.m., at the Manchester Parish Church in Mandeville. The second concert will take place on Sunday, March 28, at 5:00 p.m., at the Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios.
Tickets for the concert in Mandeville will be on sale at the Manchester Parish Church on the day of the concert. Tickets for the concert at the Jamaica Grande Hotel will be on sale at the office of the Custos of St. Ann, at 54 Main Street.
Members of the public are being urged to support the fund-raisers.
