The Police Civilian Oversight Authority (PCOA) of the Ministry of National Security will host a public forum on Friday, June 6, as part of efforts to obtain suggestions and concerns from citizens about the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and its auxiliaries.
The disclosure was made by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the PCOA, Richard Black during an interview with the JIS News, where he explained that the focus of the public forum, is to increase discussions between the police and the citizens.
“The primary purpose is to encourage dialogue with a view to increasing co-operation between the citizens of Jamaica and the police force and in particular the Commanders within the Force.that’s the crux of the forum,” he said.
The forum will be held at the St. George’s Anglican Church Hall on Great George Street in Savanna-La-Mar, Westmoreland on Friday, June 6, between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
“We want to encourage persons to air their views, thoughts, concerns, suggestions and get the police to share their plans in keeping with the citizens’ and the nations’ concerns on how they are planning to tackle all the various issues of crime and issues to do with the community engagement with the police, which is a critical feature in trying to deal with the bigger problem of crime,” Mr. Black pointed out.
According to him, the PCOA acts as a catalyst by putting these and other forums together. He noted that other forums will also be arranged at a “more localized level within community association groups and schools.encouraging increased dialogue with a view to finding solutions.”
Mr. Black also explained that the forum will target a wide cross section of communities.
“In each forum we are targeting the widest cross section of communities so we have invited persons by letter representing all areas of our society and through the media and other mechanisms inviting the public at large to attend,” he stated.
“We want to see every area of our society represented. Every area of our society is critical so it is important that everyone comes to share in the event and hopefully, out of it, we have more meaningful engagements from here on,” the PCOA Head stated.
The forum which is the second of its kind, will also inform the attendees about the PCOA, its mandate and its plans, in regards to oversight of the JCF. Among other things, the PCOA has been mandated to monitor the standard of performance of the Force and its auxiliaries to ensure that internationally accepted standards of policing are maintained.
