TEF to Help Finance Restoration of Kingston Earthquake Monument

Photo Of The Day

Prime Minister the Most Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller (left) reads from the story-board located at the monument erected in memory of hundreds of victims of the 1907 Kingston Earthquake as she recounts the tragedy to Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, the Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill as several residents look on. The monument marks the spot where five hundred victims of the 1907 earthquake and fire which destroyed Kingston are buried. Their remains were unrecognizable. The occasion was a recent visit to the site, which is located in the vicinity of East Avenue and Ninth Street, Kingston, by the Prime Minister, Minister McNeill and other government officials, to examine plans to develop the historic site. It was outlined that landscaping, the addition of an access road, a pathway, and the development of a small park are among the proposed improvements. The TEF is to partner with the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) and the CHASE Fund in executing the project. The initiative forms part of TEF’s ongoing efforts to enhance heritage and historic sites across the island.
