PM To Advise GG on Date For Local Government Elections

Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, has received the approval of Cabinet to advise Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Professor Kenneth Hall, on an appropriate date to call the local government elections. Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Karl Samuda made this announcement at today’s (October 30), post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
“Cabinet agreed to authorize the Prime Minister to advise the Governor-General on an appropriate date for the holding of these elections,” Mr. Samuda explained. “It is not the Prime Minister, who advises the Governor-General, it is the Cabinet .and as such, the Prime Minister sought and received the approval of the Cabinet to proceed with an appropriate date to call the local government elections,” he noted. Local government election is constitutionally due before the end of the year. The last local government election was held in 2003.
