Prime Minister, The Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller will leave the island this afternoon (Wednesday, October 18) for New York, where she will address the 25th Anniversary Gala of the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) and meet with members of the Jamaican community.
As guest of honour, Mrs. Simpson Miller will deliver the keynote address at the anniversary banquet at which Mr. Chris Blackwell will be presented with the AFJ’s International Humanitarian Award.
The American Friends of Jamaica is an international non-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to providing aid to Jamaica in the areas of education and healthcare, as well as for economic development. Support in these areas is channeled through local charity organizations. Since its inception, the AFJ has awarded grants in excess of US$60 Million to local charities and organizations.
Prime Minister Simpson Miller returns to the island on Friday October 20. During her absence the Honourable Robert Pickersgill, Minister of Water, Housing, Transport and Works, will be in charge of the government.
