PM Miller departs for UN General Assembly

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller leaves the island today, September 24 for New York where she will participate in the 67th General Assembly of the United Nations.  The Prime Minister will deliver Jamaica’s policy statement during the General Debate of the Assembly which gets underway tomorrow Tuesday, September 25.

The theme for this year’s debate is: Adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations by peaceful means; and among the other agenda priorities of the Assembly are:

·         Promotion of sustained economic growth and sustainable development in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and recent United Nations conferences

·         Maintenance of international peace and security

·         Development of Africa

·         Promotion of human rights

·         Effective coordination of humanitarian assistance efforts

·         Promotion of justice and international law

·         Disarmament

·         Drug control, crime prevention and combating international terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

The UN commemorated Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of membership earlier this month with a flag raising ceremony and display.  

Mrs Simpson Miller will also participate in a meeting of CARICOM leaders with the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon; meet with the head of the Inter-American Development Bank, Luis Alberto Moreno, and attend a reception being hosted by the President of the United States of America, Barak Obama and First Lady, Michelle Obama.

The Prime Minister returns to the island on Friday, September 28, and during her overseas assignment, the Hon. Dr. Peter Phillips, Minister of Finance and Planning, will be in charge of the government.
