PM Instructs Wehby to have Talks with Company on Behalf of Debtors

January 31, 2008

The Full Story

Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, has instructed Minister Without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, Senator Don Wehby, to have discussions with the company that has control over the debts of the Financial Sector Adjustment Company (FINSAC), to see what assistance can be extended to debtors.
The Prime Minister, who was speaking in his first one-hour radio call-in programme on (Jan. 30) from Jamaica House, said that since assuming office, he has received several complaints from persons, who are facing serious challenges, “not because of what happened with FINSAC, but because FINSAC’s debts were sold to a private company.”
“People have complained to me about the harsh conditions that are being imposed on them. Some of them have actually lost their property,” Mr. Golding said.
“So, I have asked Minister Wehby to have discussions with the persons, who now own that debt, to see whether we can use some moral suasion to say, let us try and see if we can provide more accommodation, try to negotiate to see if we can work with these people,” he added.
He made it clear however that the Government has no control over the company.
The new one-hour radio call in programme is part of the Government’s thrust to open the lines of communication and to hear suggestions, comments and general feedback from Jamaicans at home and abroad.
Additionally, it will provide the forum for Government to report on its stewardship in implementing policies and programmes to improve the lives of the citizens.
