PM Golding Announces Improvements for Supreme and Appeals Court

Prime Minister Bruce Golding, announced that a prominent area of Downtown Kingston will be reorganised as Justice Square, to better serve the needs of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. The Prime Minister made this announcement in Parliament on January 13.
The boundaries of the designated area would be: Barry Street to the north and Tower Street to the south; Church Street to the east and Orange Street to the West.
The Prime Minister said that plans are already in place to relocate the General Post Office and the office of the Accountant General, which are both within these boundaries. The Government is also negotiating with the National Commercial Bank to acquire its premises at the corner of Barry and King Streets, to be used as Court offices. The offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions will be relocated to another area of the designated Justice Square area to the former Attorney General’s Office on Barry Street.
The Prime Minister also said that until all these arrangements were in place, the Civil Court section of the Supreme Court will continue to operate from the Jamaica Conference Centre.
On the matter of human resources to serve the Court, the Prime Minister noted that there was a move to have more and better trained legal clerks.
