The Full Story

Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding in his welcome statement to Parliament this afternoon (Nov 25) commended visiting President of the United Republic of Tanzania, His Excellency Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, on his Government’s ambitious programme of transformation.
“We commend you for the leadership that you are providing to the people of Tanzania. We know of the challenges you face: reducing poverty, developing your infrastructure, securing the investments needed to accelerate economic growth and provide better opportunities for your people.
Some of the programmes Mr. Golding said include: economic liberalisation, structural and fiscal reforms, tax reform, diversification of the Tanzanian economy, and privatisation and support of their private sector.
“We admire the fact that despite your own economic challenges you have never failed to open your arms to the many thousands who have been displaced and have needed to find a home. It is a demonstration of the altruistic spirit that is so much a part of the tradition of Tanzania and we commend you for sustaining it” the Prime Minister said.
He added that the bonds of friendship between Jamaica and Tanzania have remained strong and unbreakable. Mr. Golding said that support will be extended in every way that the country can, as in a meeting this morning (Nov 25) areas of mutual co-operation were pledged by the two leaders.
The Tanzanian President and wife, Her Excellency Salma Kikwete and other Tanzanian officials arrived in Jamaica on Monday (Nov 23) for a State visit. They will leave the island tomorrow (November 26) for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, November 27-29. Prime Minister Bruce Golding will lead Jamaica’s delegation to the CHOGM meeting. In his absence, Finance Minister Audley Shaw will be in charge of the Government.
