The Full Story

Prime Minister the Most Hon. Andrew Holness and his Cabinet have commended the personnel at the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) for their prompt and efficient response to the threats from Tropical Storm Earl.

Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Major Clive Davis, has conveyed the commendations of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet to the personnel at the Centre.

In an interview with JIS NEWS, following a briefing to Cabinet on the current weather system, Major Davis indicated that Cabinet ministers were exceptionally pleased about how quickly the national disaster response team was able to galvanise itself.

“The Most Honourable Prime Minister indicated his commendation and was very happy with the way the national disaster team came together, and he said that he was assured based on what he saw in this episode, that if we were to have another, we would be equally good or better.” Major Davis reported.

The Director General added that members of the Cabinet also had their own words of congratulations and commendations for the NEOC.

“They were happy with how quickly the response agencies were able to pull themselves together, report to ODPEM and start operating as one unit,” he explained.

He said that from all indications, the Cabinet was satisfied with the amount of information and the timeliness with which the information was shared with the public.

“I think the consensus is that we acted in good faith and we responded to what we saw. We are certainly happy with the action that was taken,” he continued.

The NEOC has been in operation since 6:00 p.m. on August 1, following the instructions of the Prime Minister for it to be activated.

Several agencies are represented on the NEOC, including the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Jamaica Defence Force, Jamaica Fire Brigade, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Jamaica Red Cross, National Works Agency, Ministry of Health, and Jamaica Information Service.
