Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller leaves the island on Wednesday, April 30, for Mexico where she will participate in the Sixth Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Association of the Caribbean States (ACS).

The Summit, convened under the Chairmanship of Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, coincides with the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the ACS.

Among the issues before the Summit are new initiatives proposed by the Government of Mexico to further strengthen co-operation in areas such as disaster risk management, transport and improved connectivity in the region, trade development and external economic relations, as well as sustainable tourism.

The Prime Minister is expected to sign the Instrument of Ratification of the “Agreement between Member States and Associate Members of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) for Regional Cooperation on Natural Disaster”. The ACS Summit will also pay tribute its second Secretary General, the late Prof. Norman Girvan.

The Prime Minister, who is accompanied by Senator A.J. Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, will hold bilateral discussions with Ministerial colleagues on matters of importance to Jamaica and the region.

While away on official business, Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies Minister of Transport, Works and Housing will be in charge of the government. The Prime Minister returns to the island this evening.
