April 1, 2008

The Full Story

The Institutionalisation of DevInfo project in the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) has received $8.707 million, to continue to establish a reliable and comprehensive source of macro-economic indicators for the country, in order to facilitate more information-based planning and wider data access.
As set out in the 2008/09 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House, the project is funded by the Government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It began in August 2006 and will end in June 2009.
It aims to, during the new fiscal period, train public sector workers; develop advocacy material; create JamStats 2008 and establish a website; establish databases for the Ministry of Health, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force; and conduct regional and global training sessions.
Up to January of this year, 30 public sector workers were trained as DevInfo database administrators under the programme, while 200 students were trained as advanced database administrators; and the JamStats database was updated and launched.
Over the next two and a half years, it is anticipated that: routine updating of the JamStats database will be accomplished; Internet access to the database will be facilitated; the data base will be strengthened in terms of content, to include strategically important social and economic indicators; a minimum of six major data producers will be strengthened to use the software to report their data; and all interested persons will be able to rely on this national database for information on monitoring, advocacy, planning and programming.
Additionally, three government agencies, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force, as well as the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, and the PIOJ, will be empowered to use software to report their data.
