Pig Rearing Project to Begin in Western St. Mary

Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, with responsibility for Local Government Reform, Robert Montague, has said that part of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) would be used, in partnership with a processor, to start a pig rearing project and provide assistance to farmers in Western St. Mary.
Making his contribution to the 2008/09 Sectoral Debate in the House on June 24, Mr. Montague also informed that discussions were being undertaken with the Scientific Research Council (SRC) and the Jamaica Business Development Centre (JBDC), for the rehabilitation of the old Pembroke Hall boxing plant and the Jacks River old copra plant into a processing plant and business incubator.
The State Minister said that work is being undertaken at the Fisheries Co-operatives in Rio Nuevo and Oracabessa, and that four Fishing Attraction Devices (FAD) would be installed.
“We are also working with the National Land Agency to access land for our farmers,” he told the House.
On another matter, the State Minister informed that work was being done by the National Work Agency and the Parish Council to rectify the road situation in western St. Mary.
The roads include Elgin to Halifax, Rose Street, Church Road, Russell Hall, Hazzard, Geddes Town, Oxford, Gayle to Rio Nuevo, Gayle to Cascade, Airy Hill, Back Street, White Spring, Mile Gully, Palmetto Grove to Woodside to Windsor Castle, Gayle to Port Maria, Gayle to Guys Hill, Guys Hill to Palmetto Grove, Hunts Town, Bonny Gate, Mason Hall, Pembroke Hall, Marlie, Warrick Castle, Ecuador, Preston, Valley Bush, Days Mountain, Petersfield and Endeavour.
He also noted that the Petersfield and Jack’s River bridges are slated for replacement this year.
