March 8, 2013

The Full Story

Patients who use the physiotherapy department at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) will soon have better facilities to assist with their recovery.

Hospital staff will also benefit from improved and additional facilities from which to provide the services.

This is being provided for under a contract of $93.6 million, to extend and renovate the department, in order to accommodate the increased patient load, and to address disrepair.

Cabinet has approved the award of the contract to Sharecon Limited, to provide treatment and interview rooms, a conference room, a gym, and staff and student lounges.

“The work will include the addition of a new two-storey building, a split level building, and the renovation of the existing building,” Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer outlined, at a Jamaica House press briefing on February 27. The project will be funded from the hospital’s budget.

Meanwhile, Cabinet has approved the award of a contract worth $56.9 million to convert a building at 78E and F Hagley Park Road, into the main office of the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC). Work will be undertaken by Construction Solutions Limited.

In 2010, Cabinet gave approval for the BGLC to purchase the property. The project will be financed by the Commission from its cash and investment reserves.
