Persons with Flu-Like Symptoms Who Have Travelled To Influenza A (H1N1) Affected Regions Advised to Contact Health Professional

June 5, 2009

The Full Story

The Ministry of Health is reminding persons who have traveled to or have come in contact with persons who have travelled to countries with confirmed cases of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus and have flu-like symptoms, to contact their health care provider or a health care facility.
Director, Emergency, Disaster Management and Special Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Marion Bullock-Ducasse, explained that the Influenza A (H1N1) virus is highly contagious and easily spreads from person to person. She said it is therefore crucial for these persons to seek medical treatment and have the necessary tests conducted, in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
To date, there are still no new confirmed cases of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus in Jamaica. The Ministry of Health continues its heightened surveillance at the nation’s ports of entry.
Persons are urged to remain vigilant in protecting themselves from any possible infection. These include frequent hand washing with soap and water, covering mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing and avoiding close contact with persons with flu-like symptoms.
Symptoms of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus include fever, headache, cough, sore throat, runny and stuffy nose, muscle aches and extreme tiredness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may also occur, but are more common in children.
For further information on the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, the public may call the Ministry’s toll free line at 1-888-ONE-LOVE or 1888-663-5683.
