March 5, 2012

The Full Story

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS) will be observing the 10th anniversary of the Programme of Advancement through Health and Education (PATH) through a series of activities, from March 4 to 10.

Themed “Strengthening Social Protection, Empowering a Nation”, the week of activities will commence with a National Church Service on March 4, at the Boulevard United Church at 10:15 am.

On Tuesday (March 6) there will be a Civil Certification Fair, involving the Registrar General’s Department, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security at the Porus Community Centre in Mandeville, starting at 9:00 am.

“This move is very important, and will provide persons with the opportunity to capitalize on the benefits available.  PATH is a family based programme that focuses on the family unit, which involves the new born, pregnant and lactating women, senior citizens, adults, and persons with disabilities,” Project Director for PATH, Dunstan Bryan informed.

The activities continue on Wednesday (March 7) with a Social Protection Lecture Series, which will be held at the Jamaica Conference Centre, in Downtown, Kingston, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Sector Director for Human Development for Latin America, the Caribbean, and the World Bank in Washington DC, Keith Hanson will deliver the key note speech at this event.

Also, on Thursday (March 8) the Ministry will be carrying out a PATH interaction exercise at the Half Way Tree Transportation Centre, in Kingston, starting at 3:00 p.m.

“This exercise will be executed in an effort to sensitize the public about the variety of PATH benefits available, and also to accumulate feedback from current beneficiaries of the programme,” he said.

The week of activities will conclude on Saturday (March 10) with a National Church Service at the Mt. Salem Seventh Day Adventist Church in Montego Bay, starting at 11:00 p.m.

PATH is a conditional cash transfer programme, which has been providing assistance to the most vulnerable in society, since its inception in 2002.

For further details on PATH, persons can visit the Ministry’s 1F North Street Office in Kingston, or call 1888 991 7284.
