April 11, 2013

The Full Story

A sum of $1.3 billion has been allotted to provide outstanding payment for works which has been completed under the Palisadoes Shoreline and Road Project.

This is contained in the 2013/14 Estimates of Expenditure, which is now before the House of Representatives.

The funds will also be used to undertake the restoration of 1.2 kilometres of sand dunes and mangroves this fiscal year.

The project aims toprotect the integrity and viability of the investments made by the Government of Jamaica and ensure that its citizens have reliable access between home, school, healthcare facilities and work.

It also seeks to have the (Palisadoes) corridor less susceptible to flooding, while also protecting the Kingston Harbour from storm surges.

Under the project up to February 2013,  designs have been completed and contract selected; National Contracts Commission (NCC) approval has been obtained; Environmental permit has been received; and Haulage Road construction has been completed.

The project, which began in July 2010, is being implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, with funding from the China EXIM Bank.
