Palisadoes Main Road Accessible

The Palisadoes main road, which leads to the Norman Manley International Airport is now open and accessible to traffic, said Senior Communications Officer at the National Works Agency (NWA), Colin Morrison.
Sea water from storm surges associated with Hurricane Felix, which passed south of the island on (Sept. 3), had flooded a section of the roadway, making it impassable for several hours during the day. “This (storm surge) caused the water to come onto the road because the roadway in that area of the peninsula is a little bit below sea level,” explained Mr. Morrison.
He said that while the water has receded and the roadway is fully accessible, motorists should exercise caution as “there’s silt in a couple of spots.but apart from that, they can drive along that section of road now”.
In the meantime, Mr. Morrison told JIS News that rock revetment work, which is being undertaken under phase one of the Palisadoes Protection and Rehabilitation project, was not affected by yesterday’s flooding.
He said that the NWA had suspended construction prior to the passage of Hurricane Dean, but assured that, “now that the hurricane is over and we’ve done the other work that we are doing across the island, we’ll now turn our attention back to that work that was being done to construct the revetment, which will protect the shoreline and the roadway.”
