The Full Story

Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Dr. Basil K. Bryan has appealed to overseas Jamaicans to support the Tsunami Relief Fund launched by Prime Minister P. J. Patterson last week, with the country’s contribution of $15 million.
Cheques can be made payable to the Jamaica Tsunami Relief Fund, and sent to the Consulate General of Jamaica, 767 Third Avenue, 2nd & 3rd Floors, New York, NY 10017.
Dr. Bryan said that all contributions would be publicly acknowledged by the Consulate General, adding that he was confident the overseas community would respond in this time of great need.
Jamaica has joined the international community in contributing funds to victims of the December 26 Tsunami, which flattened portions of 11 nations of South East Asia and Africa.
The deadly disaster has claimed the lives of 150,000 people and authorities fear that this figure could go higher in the coming weeks as relief crews reach remote areas.
When Prime Minister Patterson launched the Tsunami Relief Fund, he also appealed to Jamaicans in the Diaspora to give generously.
“The earthquake and resulting tsunami that affected the continents of Asia and Africa, is without a doubt, the largest and most catastrophic disaster in recent memory. Over 150,000 persons have lost their lives. Millions more are now without shelter and face imminent danger. The magnitude of the disaster and the geographic distance, made it necessary to appeal for cash at this time,” Prime Minister Patterson said.
The Prime Minister said that he was satisfied that a number of civic and religious organizations in Jamaica have already embarked on a collection drive to help victims who suffered untold losses.
Jamaican nationals, organizations and businesses abroad will be able to make their cash contributions by contacting representatives at any of the overseas Missions.
The funds will then be forwarded to the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva, Switzerland, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in Jamaica.
