The Full Story

The Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology, along with its partners, will officially launch the Government of Jamaica Open Data Portal on Friday, June 24.

This was announced by Portfolio Minister, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, during his contribution to the 2016/17 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, on June 21.

The open data portal is consistent with the wider Government Transformation Initiative and will enable active engagement of government with citizens and businesses using open source software, by making government data available online in machine readable form.

“This is something we believe will drive investment and growth in our country as part of our initiative to ensure that Jamaica attains prosperity,” Dr. Wheatley said.

A draft Open Data Policy is also being developed by the Government, to guide the operations of Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

This is to facilitate greater and more convenient public access to government data, particularly for utilisation in entrepreneurial ventures, deemed potentially capable of generating billions of dollars for the economy.
