ODPEM to Prepare Earthquake Response Report for Prime Minister Golding

March 4, 2010

The Full Story

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has instructed the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), to prepare a report on the nation’s earthquake response readiness for submission to Cabinet.
The report is to contain a situation analysis and a response evaluation of the responsible agencies. It is also to note how critical agencies are going to be networked after an earthquake. The document should outline a public education programme.
Mr. Golding gave these directives at the end of a meeting with high level members of the island’s emergency response agencies this morning (March 3) at Jamaica House. He received updates from critical agencies, such as the Ministry of Health, the Jamaica Fire Service and the National Water Commission. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Transport and Works, Mike Henry.
During the meeting, Director General of ODPEM, Ronald Jackson, told the Prime Minister that an audit of critical public buildings was needed, such as fire and police stations and health facilities. It was also noted that the Prime Minister should be provided with a satellite telephone so that access to the executive arm of government will be accessible in case of an earthquake.
