All private sector companies, community groups, academic institutions and persons with an innovation or invention, and are interested in being considered for Jamaica’s first ever Innovation Awards in Science and Technology, are being encouraged to submit their applications by Friday, October 14.
Applications should be addressed to the Awards Secretariat, Scientific Research Council, Hope Gardens, Kingston 6.
The overall aim of the awards is to celebrate outstanding achievements of inventors and innovators in the field of science and technology. The award ceremony, which is slated for November, will take place bi-annually in subsequent years.
The award categories are: health and safety, environment, engineering, sustainability, popularisation of science and technology, manufacturing, education, information and communication technologies, electronics, agriculture and food, energy and entertainment products.
To be considered for an award, the particular innovation or invention should be in use a least 12 months prior to submission; must solve or significantly reduce a problem of national, regional or international importance; should be the creation of an original or unique adaptation of an existing concept, process, equipment or programme with long-term social or economic benefit.
In addition, the innovation or invention must result in increased productivity, efficiency or financial benefits; should perform a practical function that makes life easier; display creativity and demonstrate the economic use of material(s) available locally or indigenous to Jamaica; be economically feasible, safe and environmentally friendly.
Application forms are available at the SRC, Bureau of Standards, Jamaica Manufacturers Association, the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, parish libraries, Social Development Commission offices, post offices and Parish Development Committees’ offices.
