Occupational Health and Safety Symposium on Friday

April 26, 2013

The Full Story

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security will be hosting its first Occupational, Safety and Health (OSH) Symposium on Friday, April 26, at the Knutsford Court Hotel, New Kingston.

The event, being held in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), is part of activities by the Ministry to observe World Occupational Safety and Health Day on April 28. It gets underway at 9:00 a.m.

Themed: ‘The OSH Act for Jamaica – Making Work Safer, Healthier and More Productive… Are you Ready?’ the session will seek to sensitize stakeholders about the proposed Occupational Health and Safety Bill.

Senior Industrial Safety Inspector at the Ministry, Princess Fletcher-Watson, told JIS News that there will be an assessment of the Bill and “some insight as to what persons need to do to become ready for the requirements under the Bill.”

She also informed that partners from the insurance sector will be sharing their claims experience. This, she explained, “is for persons to know that there is a benefit to be had for having proper safety and health procedures and systems in place to prevent or mitigate against some of these costs that can arise.”
