NYS to Spearhead Church Services and Public Lectures

The National Youth Service (NYS) will be spearheading island wide church services and a public lecture as part of activities to mark Youth Month, which is being observed throughout November.
Speaking with JIS News, Executive Director of the NYS, Rev. Adinhair Jones said that the NYS, throughout the years has put aside a day to highlight issues and concerns related to the youth and the agency’s initiatives towards youth development.
He pointed out that this year, the NYS will celebrate this day by hosting a public lecture on November 25 at Emancipation Park from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The guest speaker will be Dr. Herbert Gayle who will focus on the topic: ‘Two Jamaicas and its impact on the youth: Re-engineering through sports’. Invited guests will include the Minister of Education, Andrew Holness; members of the Diplomatic Corps; representatives of the private and public sectors, along with youth from different sectors of society.
“We expect that the NYS public lecture will continue to speak to relevant social and developmental issues not only in Jamaica but globally and out of those discourses to create new ideas and actions to making the NYS more beneficial to our young people,” Rev. Jones expressed.
The Executive Director said that NYS participants will also be engaged in island wide church services on November 22 and 23 leading up to the lecture. There will be a final church service on November 30 to culminate Youth Month and the activities of the NYS.
“We expect that the youth will be a focal point for the service so that the message will be targeting young people and some of the issues that they have to grapple with along with new possibilities,” Rev. Jones expressed.
He noted that the programme will include the reading of lessons and special items by the youth and a presentation on the NYS highlighting its philosophies, practices and initiatives geared at youth development.
