NWC Embarks on $3b Rehabilitation Programme

The National Water Commission (NWC) has embarked on a $3 billion rehabilitation programme targeting some 445 water tanks islandwide for repairs, among other activities.

This undertaking forms part of overall drought mitigation efforts being pursued by the Ministry of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change.

Speaking at the recent commissioning of the Cascade water system in St. Ann, Portfolio Minister, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, said an initial $100 million is earmarked for expenditure over the next three months to commence repairing tanks in the areas deemed adversely affected by the prevailing drought.

“The Ministry’s Rapid Response Unit has 70 wayside tanks throughout the island, but many of these have fallen into disrepair. So approximately $7 million has been allocated to repair these tanks,” he disclosed.

Additionally, the Minister said another $10 million is to be allocated to repair approximately 26 Rapid Response Unit trucks, to increase the complement of operational units available to deliver water islandwide.
