NWA Working on Safe, Reliable Road Network System

The National Road Services Improvement Programme and Institutional Strengthening project, within the Ministry of Transport and Works, has received $300 million in the 2009/10 Budget towards the creation of a self-sustainable system for a safe and reliable national road network.
The programme will support the Ministry in the implementation of a new road network and strengthening the core activities of planning, programming and budgeting for the road sector, as well as the maintenance design and construction of roads within the national network under the auspices of the National Works Agency(NWA).
So far the project has completed the rehabilitation of road sections damaged by Hurricane Ivan, as well as approximately 95 per cent of routine maintenance.In addition, all loan agreements’ pre-conditions have been met.
For this fiscal year, it is expected to complete infrastructure and institutional strengthening components and the procurement of goods and services; as well as the finalization of the project accounts, inclusive of the release of retention for all (Stage 1) civil works contracts.
This project is being funded by the Inter American Development Bank(IDB).
