NWA Conducting Damage Assessment in Portland

August 13, 2007

The Full Story

The National Works Agency (NWA) is assessing damage in Portland caused by the heavy rains, which lashed the island on the weekend.
The rains caused flooding and landslides in sections of the parish, leaving several roadways blocked and road surfaces badly scoured.
NWA Parish Manager for Portland, Winston Palmer, said that effort is being made to restore normality to the affected areas as early as possible, adding that all the blocked roads have been cleared to at least accommodate single lane traffic.
Roads cleared so far include those in the communities of Chepstowe, Durham and Whitehall in western Portland and the Long Bay and Ecclesdown main roads in the eastern section of the parish.
He further indicated that a team has been dispatched to the Rio Grande Valley to assess the possible effects of the rains on the area, so that the necessary corrective measures can be put in place.
In the meantime, Portland Disaster Coordinator, Denise Lewis, said that the relevant agencies in the parish are combining their efforts to make the roadways safe for motorist and pedestrians.
