NWA Carrying out De-Silting Work in St. Thomas

The National Works Agency (NWA) is carrying out de-silting work on gullies and river beds in communities in St. Thomas, which were affected by recent heavy rains.
Manager of Communications and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, who toured work sites in the Bull Bay area on (Aug. 15), told JIS News that the heavy down-flow of silt from the Chalky and Bull Park rivers, were threatening the overhead bridges. “This is an emergency situation. Right now we’re concentrating on removing as much of the silt as possible from within the channels close to the bridges so that in the event of flood waters coming down, the bridges will not be threatened because it is very costly to replace the bridges,” he said.
The NWA, Mr. Shaw stated, wants to mitigate against any flooding that may occur in these communities over the next few weeks as a result of heavy rainfall.
