NPTA to Host Six Regional Conferences

The National Parent Teachers Association (NPTA) will be hosting six regional conferences, the first of which will be held on March 31, at Campion College in Kingston.
These conferences will be focusing on issues, such as conflict resolution, parenting and training, in operating an effective Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
In an interview with JIS News, Sylvester Anderson, President of the NPTA said that the association would be having regional meetings every other week until the end of May.
“At these conferences we hope to liaise with a few of the Parent Teacher Associations, because the problem we have been having is that we’re not able to meet with all of them as a result of meeting schedules. So through these conferences we will be able to facilitate that process,” said Mr. Anderson.
He stressed that the issue of proper parenting was of vital importance, “because our focus is not just to let them become involved in PTAs, but also to become better parents as well.”
The NPTA was established in July following recommendations made by the Task Force on Education, which was appointed to review and conduct a thorough analysis of the education system in Jamaica and make recommendations that are “consistent with a vision for the creation of a world class education system.”
The association is governed by the Education Act of 1980, and is committed to promoting the welfare of children and youth in the home, school, community and place of worship, and to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.
Meanwhile, Mr. Anderson informed JIS News that the NPTA is now housed at the Caenwood Centre on Arnold Road in Kingston.
“We got the space late last year and we received some furniture through Food for the Poor,” he noted.
Mr. Anderson said the association was working to get the new office equipped with a computer and a telephone.
“We are trying to get that computer and telephone service in, then we will be able to get in contact with our members or persons wishing to become a part of our membership,” he said.
