Nominations Invited for National Medal for Science and Technology

The Full Story

Nominations are invited for the National Medal for Science and Technology, which is a special honour bestowed on Jamaicans who, through natural and applied sciences including engineering, have made outstanding contributions to the economic, cultural and social development of the nation. The award is made by the Prime Minister upon the recommendation of an Advisory Board comprised of representatives from the academic, technological and scientific communities in Jamaica.
The Medal may be awarded to any citizen of Jamaica during their lifetime or posthumously and only in exceptional circumstances will the award be made to an individual other than a Jamaican citizen. The candidate’s work must have significantly enhanced Jamaica’s competitiveness, standard of living and store of scientific knowledge. A maximum of two medals may be awarded biennially.
To complete the nomination process, interested persons are asked to submit two copies of the completed nomination form which is available at the National Commission on Science and Technology, by June 30 along with a soft copy on diskette or CD. The application should clearly identify the elements of the candidate’s work and must be submitted to the Chairman of the Advisory Board for the National Medal for Science and Technology C/o the National Commission on Science and Technology, 1 Devon Road, Kingston 10.
Recipients of the National Medal for Science and Technology which was awarded for the first time in 2003, include Dr. Arnoldo Ventura and Professor Gerald Lalor. The Medal was awarded posthumously to Dr. T.P. Leakey, Dr. Cicely Williams and Mr. Austin Thomas.
