Nomination Deadline Extended

January 8, 2008

The Full Story

Jamaica’s Consul-General to Toronto, Anne-Marie Bonner, has extended the deadline to nominate persons for the 2008 Jamaica Achievement Awards for Community Service. The new deadline is February 29, 2008.
The awards were launched in October 2007 by the Consul-General, to recognize the tremendous contribution of outstanding Jamaicans in the province of Ontario.
“These awards will honour Jamaicans who have given unselfishly of themselves for the betterment of fellow Jamaicans living in the Canadian society. The awards will seek to find the unsung heroes who have been working undiscovered and unheralded and give them the recognition they deserve,” Miss Bonner told JIS News. Jamaicans living in Ontario can be nominated in 10 categories – Social Work, Education, Justice, Arts/Entertainment, Health, Media, Youth Development, Philanthropy, Work with Special Populations, and Trades. There is a separate category for which organizations and groups can be nominated.
Persons should be of Jamaican parentage, over 21 years of age and resident in the province of Ontario, while organizations should be in existence for at least five years. Individuals can also be nominated posthumously. Nominators should demonstrate in tangible ways why the nominees should be given the award.
Nomination forms should be sent to the Jamaican Consulate General by the new deadline of February 29, and are available from the Consulate and several Jamaican associations and businesses in and around Toronto.
The awards ceremony will mark the culmination of the Jamaica 45 celebrations.
