September 12, 2004

The Full Story

The south coast link between Kingston and Morant Bay has been cut, as the roadway at Roselle, St. Thomas has been eroded by storm surges caused by Hurricane Ivan. The alternative route through Cedar Valley is also blocked by fallen trees and land slippage.
Secretary/Manager at the St. Thomas Parish Council, Clinton Gordon told JIS News that the roadway at Roselle has been completely destroyed. “There is no vehicular access, you can only walk across,” he said. Mr. Gordon said that currently, a team from the National Works Agency (NWA) was clearing the Cedar Valley road to allow for vehicular traffic. “We hope that by tomorrow, we will have access through Cedar Valley to Kingston,” he said.
He also noted that the Serge Island bridge, which linked the Seaforth community with Trinityville, has collapsed.
The Secretary/Manager said that the majority of the 2,000 persons who had sought shelter in 34 centres during the peak of Hurricane Ivan, had returned home.Mr. Gordon said a team from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Parish Disaster Committee was visiting shelters to provide food vouchers for flood victims as well as to determine what other assistance could be offered to them.
