The Full Story

Budgetary support of $1.5 billion will be provided in 2007/08 for the National Housing Development Corporation (NHDC), for the completion of 16 Operation PRIDE projects.
Details of the provision were given in a document tabled in the House last week by Minister of Housing, Transport, Water and Works, Robert Pickersgill, during his contribution to the 2007/08 Sectoral Debate.
The projects include the construction of 848 apartments in Whitehall, excluding the construction of off site drains; 47 apartments in Deeside, 73 in Bushy Park 2, 87 in Frontier, 64 in Oakglades, 56 in Port Royal, excluding the construction of a sewage treatment plant; and 345 apartments in Mammee Bay.
Some 7,600 persons are expected to directly benefit from the 1,520 solutions projected to be completed at the end of 2007/2008 fiscal year. Meanwhile, the contract for the implementation of the Portmore Villa Two project, which includes the creation of 466 lots, will be awarded shortly. Work on that project is scheduled to begin in August, pending the provision of funding.
The document states that limited infrastructure works are to be undertaken and completed at Barrett Hall in St. James, Goldsmith Villa in St. Andrew, Dumfries in St. Thomas and Whitehouse in Westmoreland.
Pre-contract activities for housing projects in Kew Phases 1 and 2 in Hanover; Luana Phase 2 and Vineyard Phase 1 in St. Elizabeth are to be completed, while approximately 50 per cent of the pre-contract activities for Barrett Hall in St. James are completed.
