The Full Story

The mobility of the police in Portland has been enhanced, with the presentation of a new vehicle on July 15, by Member of Parliament for Western Portland, Daryl Vaz.
The unit was purchased with the help of some private sector and Government entities, along with a number of residents in Portland.
Mr. Vaz handed over the unit at a presentation ceremony, held at the Port Antonio Police Station. Among those in attendance were Custos of Portland, Hon. Roy Thompson; Mayor of Port Antonio, Lt. Commander Floyd Patterson; representatives of the Portland business community; and members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
Accepting on behalf of the Police was Superintendent Dudley Scott, Officer in Charge of the Portland Division.
In making the presentation, Mr. Vaz congratulated the people of Portland for the low crime rate in the parish.

The member of Parliament said he was pleased to be able to hand over the vehicle to the police, and pointed out that its use would enable the officers to be even more effective in their effort to fight crime and ensure that the parish continues to enjoy a low crime rate.
He pointed out that the effort to acquire the vehicle resulted from a tour of police stations in Portland by former Minister of National Security, Derrick Smith, during which the shortage of motor vehicles was highlighted.
Mr. Vaz said the presentation should be regarded as a proactive measure against crime, as it would enable the police to thwart criminal activities through increased presence in the communities.
In his remarks, Superintendent Scott thanked Mr. Vaz and the other organizations and persons who helped to make the presentation possible.
He said the vehicle would be used to provide good service to the people of Portland.
