New Tourism Project to be Implemented in Clarendon

May 6, 2005

The Full Story

A new tourism project is to be implemented in south-east Clarendon by Jamalco.
Known as the ‘Clarendon Express’, it is aimed at creating opportunities to extend tourism beyond sun and sand; develop education, training, business and employment on the south coast; showcase Jamaican businesses and industries, both large and small; and empower communities. This was announced yesterday (May 5) by John Sibley, President of Alcoa Global Refining, at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Jamalco refinery expansion project in Clarendon, aimed at increasing the company’s output by 150,000 metric tonnes to a total of 1.5 million metric tonnes of alumina per year.
Mr. Sibley said that ‘Clarendon Express’ would establish a link between Jamaica’s two biggest industries, tourism and alumina.
He said that the project would use some of Jamalco’s assets, such as the Breadnut Valley operations, the port, railway, refinery, mines, the Halse Hall Great House and the Whitney estate for tours by visitors, both local and foreign.
Jamalco would make an initial cash contribution to the programme of US$500,000 over three years, and in-kind contribution of US$18 million through the use of its properties, including the Whitney Estate, Halse Hall Great House, the railway line and the Breadnut Valley facility, Mr. Sibley said.
The implementation date for the project is to be announced by Jamalco at a later date.
