The Full Story

The newly established Real Estate Training Institute (RETI), located at 1 Surbiton Road, in Kingston, will begin rolling out its first set of courses in March.

Officially launched today (February 16), the institute, which was formed by the Real Estate Board/Commission of Strata Corporations (REB/CSC), will offer continuing professional development and pre-licensing courses for industry professionals.

The first Dealers’ course will be held on March 18.The schedule of courses has been advertised and courses will be added as the need arises, in keeping with best practices in the business of real estate sales, leases, rentals, valuation, property management, strata management, timeshare and auctions.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, held at the head offices of the REB/CSC, in New Kingston, Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, welcomed the initiative.

The Minister said he is  pleased that the institute is the first in the region that is exclusively dedicated to real estate education and training at the tertiary level.

He noted that it will open up new opportunities for commitment to service, and is designed to meet the increasing demand and expectations of the real estate market.

“It will provide the necessary blueprint that will add to the level of fair play for all stakeholders involved in the business of real estate,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of the REB, Sandra Watson, said it has always been a goal of the entity that it should set up its own exclusive post-secondary real estate training facility.

As such, the institute was incorporated as part of the Real Estate Board’s five year plan (2014-2018). Courses were previously offered at the University of Technology.

Ms. Watson said the RETI will offer various training courses that will be tailored to meet the needs of persons at different levels of the industry.

She explained that for new entrants to the industry, they will be required to register for the pre-licensing courses and upon passing the real estate examination, they will be given a licence to practise real estate.

The Real Estate Board has a statutory obligation to ensure that all real estate practitioners act in a professional manner and offer competent service, which is consistent with the licence issued by the Board.

In keeping with that mandate, the Board needs to ensure that all licencees are adequately trained and are conversant with the new dynamics of the industry.
