The Full Story

The ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007 will provide an opportunity for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to test its new radio communication system.
“You will see us during the tournament having, for example, islandwide coverage, so that the people working in the tournament can communicate with each other right across the entire grid of Jamaica where tournament activities are taking place,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Owen Ellington told JIS News.
Mr. Ellington said that the testing period for the new system would be over a period of time, which included the mega event, as the JCF was pursuing a structured deployment of its new assets. “Once we are out of the tournament, we are going to be moving into the more aggressive phase of islandwide testing,” he remarked.
The upgrade, he reminded, was not undertaken for CWC 2007 but rather, formed part of the JCF’s strategic outlook in terms of the modernization of communications system. “We have to relax some of the developmental work during the tournament, because we want to have the capacity to run it efficiently,” ACP Ellington noted.
Meanwhile, he pointed out that persons could utilize the 119 hotline, for both normal security assistance and also security matters relating to the tournament. “The public knows 119 and if there is any situation out there, people will call this number. The 119 staff has been briefed to separate tournament related events from normal service dispensing events,” he explained, adding that a sorting system was in place.
“Whenever we get a call about anything impacting on the tournament it will be shifted immediately to the Joint Operations Co-ordination Centre (JOCC),” ACP Ellington pointed out.
The 119 hotline has undergone significant upgrade. “We are just about now at a stage where we are significantly increasing capacity.there is also much more efficient management of the calls in terms of improved interfacing with the public, the transfer of calls internally as well as the dispatching systems,” he said.
