New President for Arts and Culture Jamaica

January 13, 2005

The Full Story

Jamaica’s former Trade Commissioner to Canada, Cherita Girvan-Campbell, has been appointed President of the Toronto-based organization Arts and Culture Jamaica.
Mrs. Girvan-Campbell has replaced Paula de Ronde as head of the 12-year-old organization, which was set up to showcase the art and culture of Jamaica to the Canadian community. The move came at the annual general meeting held on Wednesday, (Jan. 12) in Toronto.
The former President, who also founded the organization, thanked the members for their support over the years and noted that 2004 marked the coming of age of the body. “We have persevered through a period of growing pains, of creative thinking bolstered by a commitment of a group of dedicated individuals, who worked diligently to meet the objectives of Arts and Culture Jamaica,” said Mrs. de Ronde.
Noting that it was time for a new imprint on the organization, Mrs. de Ronde said she was passing the baton to Mrs. Girvan-Campbell, under whose guidance Arts and Culture Jamaica would continue to grow.
“I hope in my new role to increase my advocacy work by promoting the unique cultural and artistic heritage of our island home through continued involvement with Arts and Culture Jamaica Inc.,” said Mrs. de Ronde.
In her remarks, Mrs. Girvan-Campbell thanked the outgoing President for her exemplary leadership over the years and pledged to continue the work of the good of the organization. She attributed Arts and Culture’s success to the expertise on the committee and the “great love of the arts and of Jamaica” among its members.
Arts and Culture’s activities in 2004 included the successful Toronto launch of Olive Senior’s book, ‘Encyclopedia of Jamaican Heritage’ and Colin Channer’s ‘Passing Through’, the disbursement of scholarships ranging from CDN$500 to CDN$1,000 to five students pursuing studies in the arts and an Open House in December.
In 2005, the plans of the organization will include the launch of Douglas Manley’s ‘The Candidate,’ hosting art exhibitions, showcasing a major Jamaican classical musician, and participating in the second Caribbean Canadian Literary Expo (CCLE).
The other Executive members of the organization are Vice President, Heather Bubb-Clarke, Secretary Marcia Davis, and Treasurer Norma Brown-Larro.
